Contemporary Conflict Resolution:
The Prevention, Management & Transformation of Deadly Conflicts (Miall, Ramsbotham and Woodhouse) This is the first integrated survey of conflict resolution since the Cold War, offering an ideal introduction to the subject and an authoritative assessment of its current stage of development. What steps can be taken to prevent, manage and resolve major civil and international conflicts such as those in Bosnia, Rwanda, Palestine, Cambodia and Kosovo? What can we learn from conflicts where settlements have been reached, such as in South Africa, Northern Ireland and Mozambique? How can we respond effectively to contemporary conflicts? Using original interpretations of conflict theories, case studies and examples of current practice, the authors analyse responses at different phases of conflict, from prevention and intervention in war zones to war endings and post-settlement peacebuilding. |

Co-operative Games combines theory with many practical examples and easy ready-to-use lesson plans. The authors advocate co-operative games and activities for children not simply because they are good fun, although fun is one of their most valuable elements, but because the whole practice of co-operation is based on sound educational principles.

Global Responses to Global Threats: This major new report is the result of an 18-month long research project examining the various threats to global security, and sustainable responses to those threats. Current security policies assume international terrorism to be the greatest threat to global security, and attempt to maintain the status quo and control insecurity through the projection of military force. The authors argue that the failure of this approach has been clearly demonstrated during the last five years of the 'war on terror' and it is distracting governments from the real threats that humanity faces. Unless urgent action is taken within the next five to ten years, it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to avoid a highly unstable global system by the middle years of the century. This report outlines a more sustainable approach. |

Refugee Children in the UK Asylum migration causes intense media and political debate. However, little attention has been paid to how forced migrants can rebuild their lives in the UK or elsewhere. This timely book analyzes the social policies that impact on refugee children's education, and: provides the background to the migration of refugees; explores how dominant discourses about trauma homogenise and label a very diverse group of children; examines how policy towards refugees is made, and how it relates to practice; and, offers alternative visions for refugee settlement. Drawing on case studies of the experiences of refugee children, "Refugee Children in the UK" brings a much-needed insight into the needs of refugee children. It is valuable reading for academics, policy makers, students of education, sociology and social policy as well as education, health and social work professionals. |

All communities have skills and experiences in responding to conflict. Sometimes the dislocation of war, loss, or of moving to a new country can make it hard for people to use tried and tested community conflict resolution methods. The findings from a series of interviews are reported in Staying Connected: Echoes of Conflict, stories of how communities cope. The book presents a series of case studies exploring the traditional methods of conflict resolution amongst different communities, now resident in London. The stories were collected as part of a three year project to learn about the kinds of conflicts faced by different communities, and the ways each community responds to them. The aim is to aid understanding of the conflict resolution processes which exist within communities and to take the learning from the research to a wider network of conflict resolution and community mediation practitioners across the UK. Teaching Controversial Issues Teaching Controversial Issues explores: - what controversial issues are Young people frequently face making decisions about a wide range of issues on which there are many different views. Issues like sexuality, religion, bullying, and war can evoke complicated emotions, and lead to difficult discussions, both in and out of the classroom. Young people need to develop skills that allow them to come to their own views about, and discuss, these types of hugely important issues. Having a chance to engage with controversial issues in a constructive environment will help young people to develop as global citizens, and teachers have a key role to play in enabling this development. |

Working Together breaks new ground in providing a highly readable and accessible introduction to co-operative skills. It argues that, although co-operation isn't new, it has never been fully explored as a positive approach to forestalling, handling and resolving disputes and tensions. Co-operation is not passivity or submissiveness; it's a workable approach to identifying problems, enabling everyone concerned to reach realistic and satisfactory conclusions without aggression or violence.
